The Rundown: South Korea vs Portugal

Thanks to a late goal by Hwang Hee-chan, South Korea advanced past Uruguay in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on goals scored.

Ricardo Horta’s early goal from a Diogo Dalot cross put Portugal, who had already guaranteed their spot in the knockout rounds with victories over Ghana and Uruguay, in the driver’s seat and put Paulo Bento’s team in an early hole.

With Uruguay topping Ghana 2-0 in the other group match, South Korea realized that a win and a goal would vault them past Luis Suarez & Co into second place. After Portugal had taken a corner kick, South Korea countered with Son Heung-min racing clear and setting up replacement Hwang for a spectacular goal in the 91st minute.

Player of the game: Diogo Dalot

In his last three matches for Portugal across all competitions, Dalot has either scored or assisted on four goals (two goals, two assists). It was thrilling to catch Santos beckoning him back during our World Cup 2022 free livestream, and he sped past South Korean left-back Jin-Su Kim to set up Horta for his second international goal after joining Manchester United.

Group H runners-up South Korea had to wait till the Uruguay-Ghana match ended (and a likely last-16 matchup with Brazil) to be officially qualified. With six points, Portugal leads Group H, while second-place South Korea is right behind them. Despite their victory over Ghana, Uruguay are eliminated.

The Rundown: Ghana vs Uruguay

Group H winners Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 in their final match, preventing the Black Stars from exacting any measure of retribution for their quarterfinal loss in 2010. However, this thrilling triumph for La Celeste came at a steep price.

Following their 2-1 victory over Portugal in the group stage’s last match, South Korea jumped over Uruguay and Ghana in the standings and will now advance to the round of 16. You can check our World Cup 2022 fixtures Singapore time for the round of 16 matchups.

In the second half, Ghana made a strong push to get right back up, with the threatening Mohammed Kudus at the head of the attack. Osman Bukari, who came on as a substitute, had a number of opportunities to redirect the ball into the goal, but the outstanding Rochet and his well-drilled Uruguayan defense kept the ball out of the net.

Player of the game: Giorgian de Arrascaeta

His two goals were well taken, but they weren’t enough to get Uruguay past the round of 16. Already proved his worthiness of inclusion. Uruguay felt they had won the game after midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta of Flamengo scored twice in quick succession early on. Nevertheless, he was the most valuable player in the game between Ghana and Uruguay.

If South Korea had lost, Uruguay would have advanced to the round of 16, and if Ghana had drawn, they would have gone on to the next round. Hwang Hee-chan, however, was not warned, and the Korean swept in the game-winning goal in the 91st minute to put his team ahead of both Ghana and Uruguay and knock La Celeste out on the goal differential.

The Rundown: Serbia vs Switzerland

In a nail-biting Group G match, Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2 to punch their ticket to the Round of 16. The first half was the greatest of the tournament so far, with goals from Xherdan Shaqiri, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dusan Vlahovic, and Breel Embolo resulting in a 2-2 score at halftime.

After the break, the pace slowed and the Swiss were able to win thanks to a strong sprint from Remo Freuler. Murat Yakin’s squad put in a valiant effort and finished second behind Brazil, setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Portugal.

Player of the game: Dusan Tadic

But Serbia kept pressing, and Mitrovic eventually tied the game with a superb glancing header off Tadic’s pinpoint cross. Seven minutes later, after Vlahovic took advantage of a miscue by Freuler, they had a chance to qualify.

The Rundown: Cameroon vs Brazil

Antony and Rodrygo ran towards the Cameroonian defense, and Gabriel Martinelli, making his first international debut, had a firm header from Fred’s cross that forced Devis Epassy to tip the ball over.

Shortly after the resumption of play, Aboubakar blasted a shot across the face of the goal, but Epassy was there in the heart of things, first deflecting a shot from Martinelli over the crossbar and then dropping an attempt from Eder Militao before recovering to send the ball behind.

Brazil, as the obvious World Cup betting odds 2022 favorite here, kept on trying to pull off 3 victories in a row, but Cameroon kept on stopping them with a combination of grit and good luck. Jerome Ngom Mbekeli put in a pinpoint cross from the right that got the goal it earned, Aboubakar steering a beautiful header into Ederson’s bottom corner.

Player of the game: Devis Epassy

Due to Andre Onana’s departure from Cameroon’s World Cup camp after only one game due to a disagreement with Song, backup goalkeeper Devis Epassy found himself in the spotlight. The 29-year-old, who plays for Abha Club in the Saudi Pro League, seemed nervous and let three goals against Serbia. He also struggled to keep the ball out of the net against Brazil.
