Once called the Al Rayyan Stadium, it was dubbed the "portal" to the desert because it staged the Amir Cup Final on December 18, 2020, exactly two years prior to the official World Cup final. In 2021, it was among the two stadiums utilized for the FIFA Club World Cup. Just after World Cup, the stadium's capacity will be reduced by almost half, with the additional seats being donated to football-related causes around the world.
