France Defender Varane Won’t Play Before the World Cup

worldcup22

After going off the pitch in tears in the 60th minute of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, Raphael Varane had to wait 24 hours to find out if he would be able to play in next month’s World Cup with France.

After receiving extensive treatment on the field, the 29-year-old defender was eventually replaced by Victor Lindelof. The defender seemed to damage his knee while trying to block away a ball intended for Chelsea forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 24-hour wait

Former Real Madrid center-back, now 2018 World Cup winner, was able to walk off the field after being offered a stretcher but was visibly upset as he hobbled around the perimeter and then talked with manager Erik ten Hag on the sideline.

Ten Hag stated after the game that it was too early to tell how serious the injury was, adding that Varane will likely find out as soon as possible. As it is only 24 hours since the game, the coach claimed it is too soon to even tell.

Ten Hag said that everyone has seen Varane come off the field before, but never like this with an injury, so we must wait for the medical staff to finish their evaluation and make a diagnosis. But one thing is for sure, these injuries might end up messing up the World Cup betting odds 2022 so we’d better pay close attention.

Casemiro scored in the 92nd minute off a corner kick to tie the game after Jorginho had scored on a penalty in the 87th, and United came away from Stanford Bridge with a draw.

However, Ten Hag claimed that United should have won the game because attackers Marcus Rashford and Antony had multiple opportunities to score.

Sources claim that Varane won’t play before the World Cup

Raphael Varane will not return to Manchester United in time for the World Cup, but his injury is not as serious as initially feared, according to ESPN’s sources. Varane is set to miss 3-4 weeks of action.

Despite completing the MRI, Varane is optimistic about his hopes of assisting France to defend their World Cup title in Qatar next month.

Since Varane is unlikely to recover in time to play in France’s opening World Cup match versus Australia on November 22, coach Didier Deschamps must make a call. Check our World Cup 2022 fixtures Singapore time page for the full World Cup schedule.

Chelsea’s defensive midfielder and a major reason for France’s victory four years ago, N’Golo Kante, will not be able to participate due to a hamstring injury. Paul Pogba’s status is in doubt as he continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery, and AC Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who serves as Hugo Lloris’s backup, may not play due to a calf injury.

Erik ten Hag was hoping for a Premier League push

France has until November 9 to announce its World Cup squad, and teams can make injury replacements up until the day of their opening game. Although he was obviously in pain from his knee injury, Varane chose to walk off the field at Stamford Bridge rather than be carried off on a stretcher.

Varane walking off the field

This is disappointing news for United manager Erik ten Hag, who was hoping to push for a Premier League playoff spot before the team had a month off for the WorldCup22.

When Victor Lindelof came in to replace Varane, it gave underutilized England defender Harry Maguire a chance to get some game time and show that he was still in good shape before Gareth Southgate named his final selection on November 10.

Maguire suffered a thigh injury when representing England against Germany, but he has returned to training with United and is hoping to play in Thursday’s Europa League match against Sheriff.

Final thoughts

It’s unfortunate that Varane, who has already played 11 times this season in all competitions, will miss the next six games. As a result, United won’t have him for their pivotal match against Real Sociedad, a match that might determine who will dominate Group E.
