In a nail-biting Group G opener, Switzerland prevailed, extending Cameroon’s quest for a World Cup title by 20 years.

Bryan Mbeumo, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa all saw first-half opportunities rejected by Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer as the Indomitable Lions sought their first finals victory since 2002.

Just before halftime, Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji headed a corner kick wide from a promising position, wasting a golden opportunity for the Swiss, who have advanced to the quarterfinals in three of the last four World Cups.

Just three minutes into the second half, Cameroonian Breel Embolo side-footed home Xherdan Shaqiri’s first-time cross for the opening goal.

The Rundown: Portugal vs Ghana

Just after the half-hour mark, the ball was in the Ghana net thanks to a typically confident Ronaldo finish, but it was called out because the Portugal captain had tripped Alexander Djiku.

The second half began with Portugal again on the attack, but suddenly they were given a fantastic opportunity when Ronaldo was brought down by Mohammed Salisu and scored his 118th international goal from the penalty spot.

Osman Bukari headed Ghana back into it in the 89th minute and then taunted Ronaldo with his celebration, giving the African nation hope. In the last seconds, Ghana almost stole a draw when Inaki Williams skillfully caught Costa, but he slipped as he attempted to sneak in ahead of the goalkeeper.

Player of the game: Bruno Fernandes
