The Korean Republic had a smooth qualifying process, finishing second in Group A behind Iran, and advancing to the World Cup for the tenth time in a row with three games to spare.

Korea has advanced to the semifinals only once since 2002, the time when they had a chance to host the tournament, and each time they have been eliminated in the group stage, most recently in Russia.

However, their final group stage play against Germany will go down in history as the game in which Mexico advanced to the knockout phase by defeating the defending champions 2-0 in stoppage time. Back in Mexico, Mexican fans celebrated the triumph in front of the Korean consulate.

Key Player: Son Heung-Min (Tottenham)

All eyes will be on Son, age 30, as he tries to bring his club form to the national team. Son won the English Premier League Golden Boot honor last season. With just four more goals for his country, Son will become the third highest goalscorer in his country's history. Son is the team's standout player and the qualification tournament's leading scorer.
